We need EI reform now

The Canada Emergency Response Benefit is being phased out. Yet millions of workers will still need help. We need to ensure that Employment Insurance (EI) is ready to support them.

Use this simple tool to send a letter to your MP. Let them know you want to see EI reforms so no one falls through the cracks.  Canadian Labour Congress Letter to MP’s

District 140 reducing the number of General Chair positions

Transportation District 140 has suffered a significant loss of membership and financial revenue due to
the COVID-19 global health pandemic. As a result, Transportation District 140 unfortunately was
faced with temporarily reducing the number of General Chairperson positions within our organization,
per Transportation District 140’s Bylaws, and redistributing servicing responsibilities.

Air Canada – CEWS Extension letter from Stan Pickthall General Vice President

Over the past few days I have had a number of emails and inquiries, looking for further clarification.
At the outset: the IAM did not lay off one single person from Air Canada or from any other IAM-represented workplace. That was the employer’s action, and it is one we strenuously opposed. We continue today to fight for keeping the maximum number of members employed or on CEWS, and we are working with the NDP Caucus to apply pressure to the company. Read Letter here…

Re: Air Canada – CEWS Extension

As you are certainly all aware by now, Air Canada has elected to continue the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program for active employees and for those it expects to be recalled to active service over the coming months. I know this pandemic has created an undue hardship on many IAM families, including the majority of IAM members working for Air Canada. I have summarized below the activities that led to Air Canada choosing to continue the CEWS in the manner that it has done so: Read Letter here…

District Bulletin 33 – AIR CANADA – TMOS DPLP / MITIGATION

On May 19th Air Canada People, Culture and Communications issued a communique regarding staff reduction mitigation programs currently being offered to IAMAW Members.

In addition to the Deferred Payment Leave Plan (DPLP) provided for in Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) No. 6 of the TMOS Collective Agreement, Air Canada is also offering Special Voluntary Leaves of Absence (SVLOA) and a lackluster retirement incentive they are calling a “Universal Mitigation Program”.  Read Bulletin here…

District Bulletin 32 – TO ALL IAMAW AIR CANADA MEMBERS CANADA EMERGENCY WAGE SUBSIDY PROGRAM

On May 15th Air Canada released communications stating that those employees who are laid off will no longer fall under the CEWS program effective June 7th.

The IAMAW has advised Air Canada that they need to come to the table and maintain its employees on the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program, which is being subsidized by Federal funding, and not abandon them during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis and pandemic. Read Bulletin here…

MACHINISTS UNION CALLS OUT AIR CANADA OVER “ABANDONMENT OF WORKERS”

“Air Canada needs to come to the table and maintain its employees on the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy
(CEWS) program.” This is the message from General Vice President Stan Pickthall, of Air Canada’s largest Union.

Pickthall added: “It is beyond an embarrassment for Air Canada to layoff more than half of its employees at a time when those employees need the Company the most. This is shameful behaviour from a corporation that owes its very existence to the hard work and dedication of employees from the ramp to the maintenance bays to the cabins and cockpit. We are asking them to continue the CEWS program – which is being subsidized by Federal funding, so the airline doesn’t even have to pay for it.” Read Letter here…

Letter Re: Extension of Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy

I’m writing you on behalf of 36,000 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) who work in numerous sectors across Canada. As the General Vice President of the largest Union in air transportation, with a significant presence in aerospace, manufacturing, healthcare, the hotel industry, and other industries, I have witnessed the unprecedented impact on our member’s jobs, lives and our Union. The uncertainty and devastation has taken an unimaginable toll, the programs, and initiatives undertaken by the federal government have benefited our members in these challenging times.
