The IAMAW along with the other Air Canada Unions entered into a Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) arrangement with Air Canada.
This new arrangement brings members on Off-Duty Status (ODS), or who were laid off after March 15, 2020, back onto the Air Canada payroll. Members will have the option of receiving a wage through the CEWS program, or applying for the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), if they are better served financially through CERB. Members cannot receive both a wage through the CEWS and CERB benefits, but can select one of the options depending on which program offers a better financial benefit. Read Bulletin here…

As a result of Air Canada’s invocation of Article 20.14 – Off-Duty Status, Brothers Tim Murphey,
Shawn Archer and Perry Sidhu have all been placed on Off-duty status in accordance with their
seniority. At this point in time, the expected date of their return to active duty status has not been

The General Chairpersons and the IAMAW Canadian office have been working tirelessly in an effort to secure the information needed to answer many important questions coming from our membership regarding the application of Article 20.14 “Off-Duty Status” (ODS). Members from Air Canada YUL TMOS group have been contacting the Union at all levels to discuss their concerns with protection against COVID-19 in the workplace now that some of our colleagues have confirmed cases of COVID-19.
We believe that these concerns and worries are completely justifiable given the current context. The main questions that keep coming up is “what rights do we have?” and “what is being done to protect us in our workplace” Read Bulletin here…
We have received formal written notice from the Employer, pursuant to Section 54 [1] of the Labour Relations Code, dated March 24, 2020, resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The notice advised that they are prepared to work with the Union to try to develop a mutually agreeable adjustment plan, but no other details were provided. Read Bulletin here…
To apply for the new Canada Emergency Response Benefit in April (Apr 6 is the target date) you will need a “MyAccount” with the Canada Revenue Agency. Before you apply for the CERB benefit: Read Bulletin here…
The Canada Emergency Response Benefit will be available April 6, 2020, and for 16 weeks all new claims will be processed through the CERB, after which benefits will be paid under regular EI benefits.

“Given the confusion over the application process, and members selecting the option “natural disaster”, please tell your members that when applying they are not to select the “natural disaster” option as they’ll be asked for a 16 digit code, which is not being provided. See the email below from Service Canada about why that reference code will not be issued.
Members will only need A00. A few members have done it this way and have not had issues applying.”

“Prior to the advent of claims automation, reference codes served as useful workload management and statistical information gathering tools. While reference codes provide access to applications for benefits that are tailored to specific situations, they do not result in faster claims processing. Most claims will automate almost immediately whether or not they were filed under a reference code.
In addition, the use of reference codes is limited to regular benefits only. As a result, clients applying for special benefits sickness (including quarantine), maternity and/or parental benefits would not be able to do so with a reference code.
For these reasons, it is the position of the department that reference codes will not be issued”
